Abstract     Histochemical and structural characteristics of biceps femoris and pectoralis profundus muscles have been analysed in two lines of cockerels at different ages. On the basis of metabolic activity of succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerophosphat dehydrogenase we analysed the effect of selection on the prevailing type of energy metabolism. Selection for body weight had no effect on energy metabolism, but it induced increase in cross-sectional areas of muscle fibers. Cockerels selected for higher body weight (line Dplus) had larger mean diameter than those selected for lower weight (line Dminus). In line D(plus) animals giant cells were observed, which are the sign of morphologic alteration.
