Abstract     The concentration levels of lead, cadmium, arsenic and total mercury in fresh-water fishes from the Slovenian rivers and marine fishes from the Adriatic Sea, analysed in period from 1982 to 1993, is presented. The following fresh-water fishes were analysed: trouts, carps, nases, chubs, barbels, grasscarps and graylings. Trouts contained between 0.05 and 1.66 mg per kg As, 0.05 and 0.25 mg per kg Pb, 0.003 and 0.058 mg per kg Cd and between 0.009 and 7.250 mg per kg total Hg. High contents of Hg were found in trouts from the river Idrijca due to near-by Hg mine. The following marine fishes were analysed: sardels, sprats, anchovies, horse meckerels, hakes, tunnies, whitings, sea breams, smelts and pickarels. Sardels contained between 0.48 and 4.44 mg per kg As, 0.05 and 0.34 mg per kg Pb, 0.003 and 0.050 mg per kg Cd and between 0.030 and 0.130 mg per kg total Hg. On the base of element contents in muscle tissue of 139 fishes it was established, that in the whole period the majority of samples corresponded with the permitted tolerances for elements in fishes.
