Abstract | The aim of this article is to review the applicability of supercritical fluids in processing of pharmaceuticals. Extractions with sub- and supercritical fluids as an alternative to conventional extraction procedures are described. Examples of extractions of various plant materials are presented and extractions under high pressure are evaluated. Recently, supercritical fluids have been applied for non extractive applications as vehicles for formation of small size particles. In this sense two techniques are described and evaluated: rapid expansion from supercritical solutions (RESS) and gas antisolvent recrystallization (GAS). Examples of their applications in processing different active substances as well as polymers are presented. A third procedure, particles from gas saturated solutions (PGSS), is mentioned. | |
