Abstract     The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease of the respiratory tract, caused by the novel coronavirus type 2, with fever, cough and fatigue as the most common symptoms. Severe forms of the disease can have a diverse clinical presentation. The respiratory tract is affected most commonly, where COVID-19 can present with pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome, followed by complications of the cardiovascular, coagulation and nervous system, or the kidneys. The so called silent hypoxemia also poses a special danger. Patients with the most severe forms of COVID-19 are admitted to the intensive care unit, where they receive mostly supportive therapy. The need for a more reliable prognosis of the course of the disease and, especially, for an effective causative treatment still remains. The authors present the clinical manifestations of COVID-19, the epidemiological data in Slovenia, complications of the disease and factors that affect its outcome, as well as treatment in the intensive care unit.
