Abstract     More than 280 million people worldwide suffer from depressive disorders, and at the same time, unhealthy eating patterns are on the rise. Research in recent years examining the link between diet and depression opens up new possibilities for the prevention and treatment of depressive disorders. Healthy eating patterns based on a high intake of fruits and vegetables, fish and whole grains are inversely associated with a risk of depression, while unhealthy/ western eating patterns based on a high intake of red and/or processed meat, refined grains, sweets and dairy products with a high fat content are positively associated with a risk of depression. The micronutrients that have been shown to be important for optimal mental health are folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12, vitamin D, zinc, selenium, magnesium and iron. Unsaturated fatty acids and the amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, histidine, phenylalanine, choline and glutamic acid are also important for the proper functioning of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitters and the consequent reduction of symptoms of depression and anxiety. Depressive disorders are also associated with changes in intestinal microorganisms through inflammation, oxidative stress, and neuroplasticity.
