Abstract | The purpose of the study was to retrieve epidemiological data on MRSA in the Alpe Adria region. Nineteen laboratories from seven countries of the Alpe Adria Community participated in the study. Each laboratory screened up to 150 consecutive Staphylococcus aureus isolates for methilillin resistance. Only one isolate per patient was allowed. All participants used a uniform oxacillin-supplemented screening plate. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates were sent to Munich for reconfirmation and further susceptibility testing. Of the 2776 S. aureus strains screened, 472 (17 percent) were methicillin resistant. The promotion of MRSA in the various ALpe Adria countries ranged from less th. 5 percent in the Czech Republic to more th. 30 percent in Italy and Slovenia. None of the MRSA strains was resistant to glycopeptide antibiotics, and with the exception of two italian strains, none of the isolates tested was resistant to munipirocin. Most of the methicillin-resistant strains originated from patients undergoing surgery of being cared for in intensive care units, with wounds and respiratory secretions being the most common isolation source. With a high overall prevalence MRSA appears to be a growing problem, especially in southern countries of the Alpe Adria Community. | |
