Abstract     The authors conducted a randomised clinical trial to evaluate the effect of epidural anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia on postoperative morbidity and mortality in a group of patients scheduled for eosophageal cancer surgery. A total of 74 patients were adminitted to the study, 15 patients in group I, 31 patients in group II and 16 patients in group IV received epidural anaesthesia and analgesia with light general anaesthesia, 12 patients in group III received general anaesthesia and parenteral postoperative analgesia. Three groups, II, III, and IV recevied also dopamine continuous infusion during surgery. Similar to what has been recently reported for general anaesthetic techniques, thoracic epidural anaesthesia does not offer lower morbidity and mortality for the patients, undergo oesophageal cancer surgery on the presented study.
