Abstract     A perceptual approach has been used to derive a sampling strategy. Such a point of view allows the merger of image analysis techniques based on computer vision and in terms of concepts relevant to human vision. From ideas arising in mathematical morphology used in conjunction with models of the physiological organization of the retina, sampling operators were derived for selective analysis of scenes. These operators can serve as a primitive strategy for guiding the focus of attention which initiates active vision.
