Abstract     The self and identity formation is based on the capability for self-reflection, which is developed gradually in the process of human phylogeny and ontogeny. Phylogenetically, it is preceded by the capability of self-recognition. Ontogeny of self is a dialectical process that is based on different developmental changes, above all on maturation, changes in interpersonal relations and incompatibility between old and maturation, changes in interpersonal relations and incompatibility between old and new indetification tendencies. The human being elaborates its image on different levels of representation. Different ways of ego-involvement in the analysis of self-representation coincide with four self forms, that develop one after the other and remain at later developmental levels. These are: diffuse self, public self, private self and collective self. During the subject's development several self structures are formed. They are bound to different periods of life. Social surroundings have a great influence on their formation. The latter is also in direct connection with cognitive, affective and moral development. Its construction can be carried out at four levels. These are: psychological adaptation, cultural construction of self, individual construction of self, and co-construction of self in action and interaction.
