Abstract     Background. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a principal cause of blindness in the modern world. Timely detection and adequate therapy of DR are very important for prevention of advanced diabetic eye disease. The aim of our study was to find out how aware are the diabetic patients about the risk of diabetic eye disease and the time interval between detection of diabetes and first ophthalmological examination. Methods. We interviewed all diabetic patients who were sent to our Diabetic Ophthalmological Unit within one month with the same questionnaire. Results. From 145 patients 33 (22.7 percent) were not aware about the risk of diabetic eye disease. Only 60 patients (41.4 percent) were ophthalmological examinated in the time interval less than one year, while 85 patients (58.6 percent) were first examinated in the mean time 8.7 years after detection of diabetes. Conclusions. The results indicate that diabetic patients are not sufficiently aware about the risk of diabetic eye disease. We recommend oridinary coperation between diabetologists, general care physicians and ophthalmologists to prevent advanced diabetic retionopathy.
