Abstract     This study investigated antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and alcohol and drug dependence in a snowball sample of 97 heroin users not currently in treatment. The Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) was used for the psychiatric assessment. Lifetime prevalence of ASPD and heroin dependence reached 22,0 percent and 74,2 precent respectively. A higher level of childhood ASPD symptoms (before age 15) was associated with greater adult alcohol abuse but not drug abuse. However, a higher level of adult ASPD symptoms was good prognostic factor for concomitant alcohol and drug dependence. One should realise the research limitations of the DIS instrument. The findings are discussed in terms of need for better understanding of the role of ASPD in relationship to alcohol and other drug use.
