Abstract     The basic knee biomechanics for clinicians is described. On the one hand, the knee functions in the range of considerable laxity, but, on the other, it should maintain adequate stabilities. The most stable knee position is in extension. The significance of the physiological axis of the lower extremity and its operative correction is emphasized. The basic types of knee endoprosthesis and the main factors responsible for the intiation of the loosening process after total knee replacement are described. In the rehabilitation after trauma and surgery strengthening of the quadriceps muscle is of teh tumost importance.
