Abstract     HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) is a multisystem disease form of severe preeclampsia-eclampsia that is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, hepatic dysfunction, and thrombocytopenia and that, in most severe cases, progresses, to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Hard to diagnose and often misinterpreted, HELLP syndrome affects 4 percent to 12 percent of patients with severe preeclampsia. It should be taken into account in any pregnant women with upper abdominal pain independent of the severity of preeclampsia. For an early detection of the disease, the relevant laboratory parameters should be determined in any with signs of preclampsia, in particular in women with epigastric pain. Careful evaluation of the clinical symptoms, early determination of the laboratory parameters and immediate delivery prevent progressive deterioration of the HELLP syndrome associated with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
