Abstract     Long term results of conservative treatment of 161 congenitally dislocated hips (122 patients) from the period 1971 to 1975 have been analysed. The average period of observations was 8.1 years. When last seen nearly half of the patients had completed their growth. All the patients were initially treated by progressive traction applied in hospital. Spontaneous reduction of the hip was achieved in 59.8 percent of the patients, the others required manual reduction. If dysplasia of the acetabulum persisted beyond the second year of life a secondary procedure was performed. This was done in 39.7 percent of the cases. The late results were evaluated using clinical and roentgenological criteria. A residual dysplasia of the acetabulum was present in about 6 percent of all congenitally dislocated hips. Definitive osteochndritis of the epiphysis developed in 4.3 percent of the cases.
