Abstract | Psychoactive substances either depress or stimulate the central nervous system. Both groups comprise some widely abused intoxicating drugs. Psychoactive drugs alter the processes related to mediators of the receptors. Their effects on the organism depend on the chemical composition of the drug, and on the mechanisms regulated by the body. Agents used primarily for the therapeutic purposes include neuroleptics, anxiolytic sedatives, antidepresants and stimulants, whereas brain depressant agents and stimulants, such as psychotomimetics are a wider sense, ethanol may also be considered as one of these substances. It is difficult, however, to draw a line between addictive psychoactive drugs and medicines in the strict sense of the word. | |
