Abstract     Flumazenil, a competitive antagonist of benzodiazepine receptors, has significantly changed the strategy of diagnosis and therapy of acute benzodiazepine poisoning. Unfortunately, such treatment is not without unwanted drug reactions, which are mostly due to provocation of benzodiazepine abstention symptoms. These symptoms are relatively benign and can be easily avoided by slow application of flumazenil in small doses. Because its elimination time is much shorter than that of the benzodiazepine, the clinical picture of poisoning can develop again. Thios may be dangerous in case, if the awakened patient refuses further treatment and leaves the emergency department. After a definite time, when the effect of flumazenil diminishes, the syptoms of poisoning may reappear, which can be fatal for the patient the potential participant in the traffic.
