Abstract     The study includes 60 cycles stimulated by a combination of clomiphene citrate, human menopausal gonadotropin (hCG) in 46 patients aged 24-44. Folicular growth was followed daily using a transvaginal, beginning on the seventh day of the cycle until the application of hCG. The obtained diameter, surface and volume values of follicles were correlated with the values of serum concentration of estradiol (E2). A high correlation exists between the diameter of the dominant follicle and serum concentration of E2 (r=0.6912; p less than 0.001), and between the total surface of all follicles and serum concentration of E2 (r=0.7639; p less than 0.001). Somewhat lower correlations exist between the surface of the largest follicle and serum concentration of E2 (r=0.6636; p less than 0.001). A high correlation exist between the volume of the dominant follicle and serum concentration of E2 (r=0.6159; p less than 0.001) and a still higher correlation exist between the total volume of all follicles and serum concentration of E2 (r=0.7365; p less than 0.001). The study shows the high correlation of morphological and functional occurences in the process of follicular growth. Transvaginal echosonography of the ovaries makes a precise monitoring of size and number of follicles possible and can completly substitute the determing of serum E2 concentration in the sence of determining the time for the induction of ovulation.
