Abstract     Slovenia is a part of a large Middle European geographic area where tick'borne meningoencephalitis (TBE) is endemic. The rate of ilness in Slovenia in last 15 years is 5-13/100000 inhabitants. Only 10-19 percent of patients are children. Infection with group B arbovirus is responsible for 35 percent of all viral infections with CNS involvement in childhood. Over the past 15 years, 146 children with TBE have been treated at the children's Department of Infectious Diseases Clinic, Ljubljana. More or less pronounced manifestations of encephalitis were observed in 31 percent of cases. The incidence of TBE is lower in children, who also have a milder clinical course with lesser complications and better prognosis than adults. In our series ther were no fatalities. 15 patients (10 percent) developed sequelae, in 6 of them they were of severe degree and included epilepsy, paralysis, paresis, and serious mental disturbances. Susceptibility to infection was found to increase with age. 76 percent of the affected children belonged to a school-age group. Severe sequelae were observed only in patients over 6 years of age.
