Abstract     Background. Preterm labour and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) are the major causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality and represent up to 80% of overall perinatal and early neonatal deaths. The incidence of preterm abour and of IUGR ranges between 3% and 11%, and 4% and 6%, respectively. One of the risk factors leading to either event are congenital uterine anomalies, considered as minor risk factors by the authors of predictive systems. Congenital uterine anomalies may cause spontaneous abortions, preterm labours, IUGR, malpresentations and obstetric complications. The established diagnostic procedures for detecting tests; thus the incidence of congenital uterine anomalies remains unknown in the whole population as well as in the groups at risk for preterm labour and/or IUGR, and is based on estimations, ranging from 1% - 3%. It is considered that the prognancy in women with congenital uterine anomalies most frequently ends in spontaneous abortion, and only in 20% of cases in preterm labour. Aim. The aim of the study was to find the role of congenital uterine anomalies in the etiology of preterm labour and IUGR, and their incidence in the risk populations of women with preterm labours and IUGR. Patients and methods. In the retrospective study we enrolled 508 patients after delivery of a singleton without malformations. In the first study group (N=107) we enrolled the women who delivered appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants before term; in the second group (N=100) the women who delivered small for gestational age (SGA) infants before term, in the third (N=101) the women who delivered SGA infants at term; and in the control group (N=200) the women who had had at least two vaginal term deliveries of AGA infants. Retrospecitvely we also analyzed the outcome of pregnancy in 105 women who delivered after metroplasty. For the detection of congenital uterine anomalies Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.
