Abstract     The electric double layer which is formed when a charged plane is in contact with an elecrolye solution is studied. The electrostatic forces are described by means of a mean electrostatic field while the finite size of the particles in the electrolyte solution is taken into account by means of the exclude volume effect. Due to simpilcity, a symmetric univalent elecctrolyte is considered. The electrostatic free energy Fel, cosistently related to distribution functions for particles and to the differential equation for the potential of the mean electric field, is calculated. The results are compared to Fel calculated by using the Poisson-Boltzmann theory and also to Fel calculated by using the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann theory valid in the limit of a weak electrostatic field. It is shown that inclusion of the excluded volume effect increases the values of Fel relative to the Poisson-Boltzmann case while at very high bulk ion concentrations the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann theory becomes even a better approximation than the Poisson-Boltzmann theory due to strong shielding of the electric fried of the charged plane by counterions.
