Abstract     An accordant mental development throughout all periods of the life cycle is important for the mental health of the elderly. The most frequent cause of crisis which confronts the elderly is loss, such as death of a partner, friend or contemporary; loss of job by retirement; reduction in mental and physical capabilities; reduction or loss of the immediate social environment; loss of worth in the home environment and last, but not least, the loss of self respect. Will the elderly person survive the crisis alone, will he have the determination and the apportunity to at least indirectly alert the people around him, or will he attempt to weather the crisis alone and give up hope? The decision to seek help at the time of crisis depends on the experiences acquired during his lifetime. In resolving a crisis for an elderly person it is necessary to include all professionals who can assist in specific areas. Help must be available and take into account the special needs of the elderly. In addition, it is necessary to initiate and actively include his relatives in resolving the crisis.
