Abstract     In his lifetime the individual develops stable patterns of behaviour, which he would likely prefer to retain to some extent in later years. The relationship between the development of the personality and behavioural patterns in the mature and later eras is explained by the theory of continuity. Continuity ofidentity is expressed by the feeling of being needed, which is positively linked in later years to life satisfation, marital status as well as health status. Research shows (Jezernik, 1980; Long, 1989; Hojnik-Zupanc, 1991) that after retirement passive activities prevail to a greater extent over active ones. But hobbies should not be neglected (Jezernik, 1980, Hojnik-Zupanc, 1991). The attitude towards an active lifestyle is linked to gender and education (Eivkovi, 1973). Persons with a higher education have a more active outlook on life. Women are directed towards housework and family relations. In general the difference between men and women is in that the activities of the later are more of a relational nature. Slovenian retirees do not have many legal possibilities to work after retirement. The law allows a partial retirement after the fulfilment of the criteria for age retirement, if the employer has such an interest. Currently this option does not exist in practice to any extent. More established is the legal exception that allows full time employment for the proprietors of firms and institutions who have fulfilled the criteria for retirement, but this applies to only a specific group of people. Only a few organised opportunities exist in Slovenia for an active lifestyle in the third life era. We lack apportunities for employment, e.g. work cooperatives, small firms with tax reductions, a gerontological centre to promote an acctive social life for the retired, and a programme of preparation for retirement, which could have a preventive function for a healthy old age.
