Abstract     The present study compares the measurements obtained with a measuring tape (MT) and an modified caliper (PKM). Thirty healthy subjects participated in the study (18 females and 12 males), their mean SD age being 28.610.4 yrs. (range 14 to 35 yrs). Measurements of the flexibility of the thoraco-lumbar spine in the saggital plane were made between the C7 and S2 vertebrae during flexion. Measurements of spinal flexibility using MT and PKB were conducted on two occasions, separated by 72 hrs. During each session, measurements of flexibility were repeated three with three times minute intervals between measurements. The Pearson correlation coeficient was used to determine the least significant difference (LSD) between measurement techniques, and their limits of agreement (LoAI. Mean SD values of flexibility determined with PKM were 5.41.6 cm in the measurement session and 5.41.9 cm in the second session. Flexibility values determined with MT were 8.11.5 cm in the first measurement session and 8.11.5 cm in the second session. The correlation coefficient for both measurement techniques was highly significant (PKM: r=0.93-0.97: MT: r=0.88-0.95; p less th. 0.001). There was no significant difference in the reliability of the two methods.
