Abstract     The repor describes two methods of measuring passive rotation of the lumbar spine. Sixty subjects participated in the study (32 males and 28 females) aged 21.2 yrs (range 18 to 32 yrs). The first method utilised the OB goniometer (OBG) with a magnetic needle, (Myrin). The mean SD range of flexibility was 14.20.05. The coefficient of correlation, which reflects the reliability of the test was 0.840.05 (p less th. 0.001). The second method utilised a tilt table with a gravitational goniometer mounted on the table. The range of flexibility measured with this method was 142.3. The correlation coefficient was 0.890.03 (p less th. 0.001). A comparison of measurements derived with both tests yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.84 ( p less th. 0.001). A two-tailed Students t-test (t=-1.47;p more th. 0.05) indicated that neither of the tests was more advantageous. It would appear that both OBG and NM have similar characteristics in terms of measuring passive flexibility of the lumbar spine.
