Abstract     The report discusses the serious consequences of falls in the elderly and emphasizes the need for a reliable, validated and simple method for determining individuals at risk of accidental falls. The authors outline the required characteristics of an optimal test. The test of functional reach (FD) is critically examined, and a modified version of this test is presented. The report also present the theoretical basis and methodology for evaluating the modified functional reach test. Fifty subjects participated in the study and were assigned to three groups: the first group comprised 24 young healthy females, with a mean SD of 20+-1 yrs (range 18 to 21 yrs); the second group comprised elderly females 82+-6 yrs of age (71 to 91) with no prior history of falls; and the third group of elderly females, 82+-9 yrs of age (62 to 96 yrs) with prior history of falls. The results indicate that the functional reach test is a reliable, simple and useful test, which has clinical application. The report concludes with a discussion of issues which require further investigation.
