Abstract		A stroke is the most common neurological disease which appears at 600 persons per 100.000 inhabitants. It is one of three most common causes of death in most countries and it is undisputed on the first place by the numbers of disabled persons. In this article are described most common types of stroke, areas and causes of impairment and consequences of stroke. The author presents some of the basic principles of different approaches used by physiotherapists at neurological defficit treatment. The most part of the article emphasises a treatment of hemiplegic patient from the acute stage, throught the process of verticalisation, to the final goal: to improve the function.
