Abstract     The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ljubljana, within the framework of research into forensic haematology and haemogenetics, carried out tests on certain segments of human genome with the purpose of studying population statistical parameters within the Slovenian population. From blood samples taken for the purpose of determining blood alcohol levels, and from samples taken from blood donors at the Blood Transfusion Institute (blood samples were donated by male and female persons from different regions of Slovenia), the DNA was isolated and multipled using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), subjected to electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel using both horizontal and vertical techniques, and stained with ethidium bromide or silver staining. Attempts were made to process the material at seven VNTR loci and microsatellites. The DNA of 100 unrelated persons was processed, and the levels of heterozygosity for individual VNTR loci and microsatellites determined.
