Abstract     In osteoporosis early diagnosis is essential for timely treatment. In the initial phase it can only be detected by densitometry since the radiogram is insufficiently sensitive and does not reveal changes before osteoporosis is well developed. Absorpciometry with dual energy X-rays has replaced dual photon absorpciometry. At our institution quantitative digital radiography is used for the determination of bone mass. At present quantitative digital radiography is the best and safest method for bone mass determination. The Hologic 2000 plus device is easy to handle, accurate, fast and least injurious to health since radiation during the investigation is minimal. For the time being we can determine the bone mass on the neck of the femur, in the lumbar spine in two projections, in the lateral projection with exclusion of artefacts due to extravertebral calcinations. The bone mass of the entire body as well as morphologic changes of the vertebrae can be established. With additional computer equipment the bone mass of the hands, of the bone surrounding a prosthetic (metal) hip and the soft tissue composition of the entire body as well as the bone mass of small animals can be determinated.
