Abstract     Outpatient prescription of drugs is monitored in Slovenia on the basis of automatic processing of prescriptions. Data is collected on drugs dispensed, patients to whom the drugs have been prescibed (patient's age and sex) and prescribing physicians. This paper presents the outpatient prescribing of antibacterials for systemic use. In Slovenia, antibacterials for systemic use represent over 10 percent of prescribed drugs. It can be assumed for this group of drugs that one prescription is the same as one cure. Data is therefore presented on the number of prescriptions dispensed and the number of defined daily doses (DDD). In the period from 1991-1994, the number of prescriptions dispensed for antibacterials for systemic use increased by over 16 percent in Slovenia. The number of prescriptions for macrolides, quinolones, cephalosporins and penicillins (excluding beta-lactamase sensitive penicillins) is increasing, while that of prescriptions for sulfonamides, beta-lactamase sensitive penicillins and tetracyclines in decreasing. The consumption of these drugs is highest for highest for small children. In comparison with other countries, a low consumption of tetracyclines and a high consupmtion of penicillins (excluding beta-lactamase sensitive penicillins) and characteristics of Slovenia. For more detailed analysis of the consumption of antibacterials for systemic use, data on indications for which the drugs were prescribed, their dosage and data on the patients to whom the drugs were prescribed would be required.
