Abstract     Immunization is the act of artificially inducing immunity to provide protection from infectious disease; it can be active or passive. Active immunization is the most effective, safe and cheap means of preventing disease. All adults should be immune to di htheria and tetanus, to measles, mumps and rubella. Influenza vaccine is recommended for routine annual administration to adults 65 years of age and older. Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is recommended for administration to the elderly and the chronically ill. Haemophilus B vaccine and Varicella-Zoster Virus Vaccine are recommended for administration to some of the chronically ill. Hepatitis B virus vaccine, rabies vaccine, typhoid vaccine and tick-borne encephalitis vaccine are recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure. For travellers to some countries immunization to yellow fever is required and immunization to hepatitis A and B, poliomyelitis, tetanus, diphtheria, measles, typhoid, meningococcal meningitis and rabies is recommended. Health workers should be immune to the hepatitis B virus, measles, mumps and rubella, to tetanus and diphtheria, to influenza and some to tuberculosis.
