Abstract     From silicone rubber aprotic solvents desorb most polychlorobiphenyl (PCB) congeners originating from bis(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl)peroxide, whereas protic ones do not. Migration of PCBs is favoured by a lower level of substituion, by a higher number of ortho substituents, and by a 2,5-substitution pattern. The influence of solvent type on PCB migration is the least on symmetrically substituted PCBs. With increasing polarity of the solvent the global migration of PCB decreases but the decrease is the least among the nonsymmetric PCBs. The influence of carboxylic acids and of benzene indicates some similarities. Testing the migration of PCBs into food has to be close to real conditions, considering the properties of the target medium.
