Abstract     The basic treatment of odontogenic infections icludes surgical measures designed to remove the cause of infection and/or incision and drainage. The access of air to hypoxic tissues inhibits the growth of anaerobes, whereby also aerobes are rendered less pathogenic. When antibiotic therapy is indicated, broad spectrum penicillins are the treatment of choice. Severe cases of acute infection are most likely to respond to amoxycillin with clavulanic acid.
