Abstract     The purpose of this retrospective study was to define the most frequent cause for peritoneal catheter (PC) removal in our patients (pts) on pertioneal dialysis (PD). Between June 1983 and June 1993, 172 PC were surgical inserted in 137 pts (mean age 58+-14). Almost half of them were diabetics. Sixty-six 36-month were removed (36%). Average survival of all PC was 44.8%. Observed were 85 exit site and/or tunnel infections (ESI/TI) with incidence of 1 ESI/TI/30.7 pts/month. ESI/TI were the most frequent causes for PC removal (in 16.3%). peritonitis (P) caused PC removal in 10.5%, obstruction in 5.8%, hernias in 2.3%. Despite early, accurate diagnosis and aggressive therapy, ESI/TI remains the most frequent cause of PC removal in our pts.
