Abstract     The object of this retrospective study was peritoneal catheter survival and complications registered in the period between June 1983 and March 1992. A total of 130 catheters (108 were swan neck 2 cuffs - SN2C) were sugrically inserted to 100 patients (pts). The avrage age of the pts was 59.3+-13.5 years, one half of pts (49) were diabetics. The major complications reducing survival of catheters were exit site and/or tunnel infections in 16.2%, peritonitis in 13.1%, drainage obstructions in 7.7%, technical impairment and avulsion 3,4% and hernias in 2.3% With SN2C less complications were registered. Suvival of all types of catheters at 36 months is relatively low (43+-6%). It is, however, much better for SN2C (48+-7%) compared to other types of catheters (30+-11%), but considering the small number of other catheters used the differences were not statistically significant. No statistically significant difference was registered considering the person who takes care of catheters and considering the sex of the caretaker. In diabetics we found no more complications nor worse catheter survival than in nondiabetic pts.
