Abstract     Starting from the difference in surface of a cylindrical and spherical body of the same volume, we studied the physiological significance of the internal surface of the left ventricle (SLV). Echocardiographic determination of volume slices according to SIMPSON's rule was used. The LAPLACE law and the shape of the LV are important determinants of O2 consumption of the LV. Examples of the SLV in normal and pathological cases are given. The shape and the dynamic interplay have a dominant role in the end effect of cardiac activity.
