Abstract		This population group comprises people who are most unlikely to earn their living, who have no retiriement pension, no other means and no relatives able or willing to care for them. Unsuitable housing conditions are responsible for a very low level of hygiene and poor health status, and the resulting high morbidity and spread of infection among these high risk people, who in addition are faced with an incrasingly difficult access to health services to the problem. The almshouse in Ljubljana thus represents the first link in the chain of similar institutions in Slovenia. With the ever growing number of homeless people, the need for such housing arrangements is rising fast.
