Abstract     The activity and everity of disease in patients with chronic hepatitis C can only be eliably assessed by performing liver biopsy. Some of the histopathological changes found reflect the activity of disease (inflammation), while others represent the staging of disease (fibrosis, cirrhosis). As a complement to invasive technique, we studied the abilities of standard laboratory blood tests to monitor and assess histopathological changes in liver biopsy. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were applied on a clinical database to relate relevant sets of tests to inflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Resulting extracted knowledge, with an ability to point out activity and severity, is used as a part of the Liver Gide, a corresponding knowledge-based decision support system, and can be propagated into clinical practice.
