Abstract		In the autum of 1995 the ministry of Health, announced a public tender for research and eveloped project in the area of Data Protection and Security within the HIS. A proposal for the public tender was prepared by a tem from the Institute of Public Health of the republic of Slovenia. The project has been carried out in three months. The project group was composed by the most eminent experts from the area of legislation, medical experts from all Health Care levels and medical informatics. The final result is a document - "Principles and Guidelines for Data Privacy of Health Information System.
