Abstract		Throughout Erope, systems of healthcare are under growing pressure to become "more efficient". Healthcare service providers must incrasingly meet demands from two sides: higher quality care at less cost, but not at expense of patient care. It has been estimated that 30% of the nunning costs of healtchare system can be attributed to information processing and organisation. Such information is not restricted to the treatment of individual patients - hospital or general practitioners operate with in an environmentwhere other areas, such as logistics, financial accounting, etc., also place demands on information resources. With the introduction of Electronic Data Interchange - EDI we could bridge the gaps between the many information systems needed for eficient care - providers, insurers and suppliers. EDI is not used to eliminate paper itself, it is used to eliminate the work - printing, re-keying, mailing, etc. - associated with it.
