Abstract     The author of this contribution is pointing out the characteristics, significance and role of the Management information system (MIS). Along with the development of informatics in general, and especially with the possibilities offered by the information technology, MIS is becoming an ever more important component of the management system, above all at the highest level of a manager's activity be it in a public institution, or the state. From the determination of the goals and objectives of a MIS, we derive also its contents, the what, when, where and how of its implementation, which data and information to capture and transform, and what for and how to use them. The author also attempts to answer briefly to the questions of why a special MIS is required for the manager, and what are the distinctions between such a system and other informationsystems. Due to the characteristics of the health care system, the MIS for a health care manager has also some special characteristics, which have to be strictly considered in designing such a system in order for the MIS to fulfil its true objectives. MIS differs form the other information systems most of all in the way in which the manager obtains information and in the required form of these information to serve as a suitable basis for timely actions and decisions, and for the communication between various levels of management an their carriers.
