Abstract     In three male neurologically intact adult subjects and five patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) lung volume changes were measured by pneumotachograph (pnth) and optical method, during normal brathing and during functional electrical stimulation (FES) of abdominal muscles in synchrony with naturally occurring breathing. The values of absolute volumes obtained by optical method are similar to those of pnth. The measurement procedure in the supine position needs further improvement. Despite this deficiency the optical method proved to be an unique tool for measuring partial volumes and especially their relative changes introduced by FES of abdominal muscles, compared to those during quet breathing.
