Abstract     Fluorescence detection using differences in autofluorescence between normal and malignant tissues offers new possibilities of detecting and localizing early laryngeal carcinoma. Fluorescence imaging was performed using a specially designed devide that exploits differences of fluorescent properties of normal and cancerous tissues without photodynamic drugs. The fluorescence was induced by helium-cadmium laser, captured by an image intensified camera and displayed on video monitor after previous computerization. 30 patients (in 18 of them malignancy was suspected) were taken in evaluation. Laryngoscopic appearance obtained by standard laryngomicroscopy was compared to fluorescence image, to computerized fluorescence intensity measurement and to histological findings. The experience from this study shows that autofluorescence larygoscopy could be a useful complementary method in detecting laryngeal malignancies.
