Abstract     The authors are presenting the conduction of systematic health examinations as part of preventive programme of the Dispensary for children in Maribor. Systematic examinations of the total population of children are defined as "screening", meaning that seemingly healthy children are examined in order to find those who seem unhealthy. The total population of children born in Maribor is examined: infants in their first year of life, three-year-olds, prior to vaccination, before going to creches or kindergarten, before going to health-holiday resorts and systematic examination in nursery and kindergarten, and before entering school. Children are examined with the help of certain tests and methodology. Children with variations of normal development or health status are directed to diagnostic procedure, called in for follow-up examinations or therapy. During systematic examinations, we also receive information on the social-economic position of the family, the state of health, life-style, etc. This information is necessary for an epidemiological analysis of habitat quality, risk factors associated with the health of our children and their family.
