Abstract		Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease risk factor in adults and has its origins in childhood. Preventative measures are mainly directed at environmental influences on blood pressure including factors that predispose to obesity, dietary intake of sodium and potassium, alcohol intake, amount of exercise taken and exposure to stress. In spite of these it remains unclear whether such manoeuvres will have long term benefits and there is increasing need to also consider factors that are operative in utero such as maternal diet and nutrition.
