Abstract | Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has now been successfully used in many countries. A decrease in mortality has been demonstrated in developing communities. In developed communities where mortality is low, as in many parts of Europe, ORT has often been under-utilised. It is of key importance to promote its use as the first-line treatment for acute diarrhoea especially in infancy where dehydration is such a risk. The use of reduced-osmolarity oral rehydration solutions is particularly effective therapy especially for the children of Europe. | |
