Abstract     During a four-year period (1988-1991) 193 children admitted to the Pediatric Department for acute diarrhoea with mild and moderate dehydration (5 +- 4%) were randomly allocated for treatment with 5 oral rehydration solutions (ORS) of different so- dium and glucose content. The solutions had sodium concentrations of 45, 60, 75 and 90 mmol/l and glucose of 200, 144, 111 and 90 mmol/l, respectively. On admission and 12 hours after rehydration, body weight, serum sodium, potassium, chloride and acid-base balance were determined and analysed. The results were compared according to the different groups. The analysis shows that among the different oral rehydration solutions, 0RS60 with 60 mmol/l sodium and 90 mmol/l glucose were the most favourable in the relatively mildly dehydrated patients currently seen in Slovenia.
