Abstract     In Slovenia, acute infectious diarrhea remains an important cause of morbidity and hospitalization of children. In up to 85 percent of cases the cause of diarrhea can be determined with the use of currently available diagnostic procedures. The most frequent cause of diarrhea in young children is rotaviruses. Among bacterial causes, Salmonellae and Campylobacter jejuni/coli predominate. In Slovenia, Shigellae have become a rare cause of acute diarrhea. Parasites cause acute diarrhea in less than 5 percent of hospitalized children. The article presents the causative agents of acute infectious diarrhea, specific complications and indications for antibiotic treatment. The etiology of acute diarrhea in children hospitalized at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ljubljana in two periods is presented. Routine antimicrobial treatment is not recommended. The use of antibiotics is advised in specific epidemiological indications, in certain immunodeficiency disorders, in patients with severe or protracted course of particular infections and in very young children.
