Abstract     Linear irreversible thermodynamics is applied in a theoretical study of lipid translocation fluxes in membrane bilayers. A model system of a bilayer composed of two lipid species is considered and the corresponding fluxes are given in terms of phenomenological equations as linear functions of differences in chemical potentials. The chemical potential consists of two contributions, the first one corresponds to the concentration difference of lipids between the two monolayers and the second one to the mechanical imbalance of the bilayer. An expression for the latter one is derived referring to the non-local bending contribution of bilayer elastic free energy (bilayer couple model). Using an appropriate transformation the fluxes are expressed as functions of two terms. The first one belongs to diffusion due to concentration differences. The second one corresponds to a flux driven by the elastic force arising from the monolayer area difference. The latter term is cross-linked to diffusion of.
