Abstract     The authors described the basics about the disturbances of consciosness and their causes. The first step of treatment of unconscious patient requires an evaluation of unconsciousness and care of the vital functions: respiration and circulation. The unconscious patient must be intubated and ventilated with high percentage of oxygen. At intubation care must be taken about the cervical spine which should be immobilized also during transportation. Intravenous line must be installed. Hyper- or hypotension is symptomatically treated. Possibility of cerebral swelling or edema must be taken into account. Neurological examination has to be performed and treatment started according to GCS and the pres-ence of lateralization. During transportation which must be very careful several parameters are monitored: ECG, noninvasive measurement of blood pressure, pulse oximetry, frequency and depth of breathing, capnometry and body temperature.
