Abstract     Good communication between the patient and the nurse is an important element of efficient care. In emergency situations, successful communication may be difficult to establish because of the severity of the patient's condition. An individual approach must be adopted for every patient. A patient seeking emergency medical care is often overcome by pain, uncertainty and fear. Besides attention to his medical problem, he needs empathy, encouragement and support. This places great demands on the nurse, who must possess suitable personal qualities to be able to cope with his psychological needs. The process of communication involves the use of verbal and non- verbal skills. The latter comprise eye contact, physical contact, facial expression, body posture and movement. The quality of communication depends on the nurse's knowledge and experience. It is important that she conveys information to the patient in a suitable way, observes its effect and registers the patient's response. The author explains the concept of therapeutic communication, describes the techniques used and presents several cases from her experience, which are intended to, help the nurse understand the patient's feelings and behavior and alleviate the stress associated with his visit to the emergency centre.
